The India-Pakistan encounter at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 was a nail-biter, leaving both fans and former players on the edge of their seats. But even after a tense match, it seems the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie prevailed, thanks to the friendly banter between legendary cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Shahid Afridi.

Yuvraj Singh and Shahid Afridi engage in a fun chat

Following India’s thrilling win, a video went viral showing Yuvraj consoling a seemingly disappointed Shahid. Yuvraj’s playful approach had everyone chuckling. Apparently, when Pakistan needed just 40 runs to win, Yuvraj jokingly congratulated Shahid, assuming the match was theirs.

The ever-optimistic Afridi, however, reminded Yuvraj that 40 runs on that pitch were far from a guaranteed win. Despite the playful jabs, both players acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the game and the importance of sportsmanship. Yuvraj, ever the believer in his team, admitted he still had faith in India’s ability to win, while Afridi, though disappointed, took the loss in stride.

Here’s how the conversation between the two icons went:

Yuvraj: Lala, why are you sad? What happened?

Afridi: Isn’t it fair that I am sad? Was this a match we (Pakistan) should have lost? When we needed to score 40 runs to win, Yuvraj told me “Lala, congratulations! I am leaving, won’t watch the rest of the game”. I told him ‘Yuvi, chaalis runs bohut hain iss pitch pe. Itni jaldi mubarakbaad na de mujhe (40 runs are a lot on this pitch, don’t congratulate me so early).

Yuvraj: I told you Pakistan will win, but I was still confident that we (India) can win it from there. Winning and losing is part of the game, what’s important is that our bonhomie should continue.
