India kicked off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Ireland on Wednesday (June 5). The Men in Blue earned a crucial two points in Group A, displaying dominance with both bat and ball at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Clinical bowling performance by India

The Indian bowlers were in exceptional form, restricting Ireland to a modest total of 96 runs in just 16 overs. Hardik Pandya was the standout performer, claiming 3 wickets for 27 runs in his four-over spell. Jasprit Bumrah (2/6) and Arshdeep Singh (2/35) provided excellent support, dismantling the Irish batting lineup and ensuring a strong start for India.

Effective chase led by Rohit Sharma

Chasing a target of 97, India made light work of the run chase, reaching the target in 12.2 overs. Captain Rohit Sharma led the charge with a composed and strategic half-century, managing the innings skillfully despite a challenging pitch. Rohit’s efforts were complemented by a gritty knock from wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who remained unbeaten to see India home.

Fans’ chants for Virat Kohli

During the match, a notable incident occurred when Indian fans began chanting for legendary batter Virat Kohli to bowl. The crowd’s enthusiastic chants of “Kohli ko bowling do” (Give the ball to Kohli) resonated throughout the stadium, reflecting their desire to see the star cricketer take up a bowling role. A viral video captured this moment as fans cheered Kohli while he fielded at deep mid-wicket. Despite the fervor, Kohli remained focused on the game and did not engage with the crowd’s request.

Kohli’s early dismissal

Kohli, who joined the team late and missed the practice game against Bangladesh, had a disappointing start to his T20 World Cup campaign. Opening the innings with Rohit, Kohli was dismissed cheaply for just 1 run off 5 balls by Ireland’s Mark Adair. Kohli will be eager to find his form in India’s upcoming match against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9.
