Broken, but real

In the current scheme of things, it doesn’t come as a surprise when a true journalist questions the motivation of the profession and the outcome. In The Broken News, editor Amina Qureshi’s world spectrum shifts when her pillar of support Radha, played by Shriya Pilgaonkar, gets arrested, leaving her vulnerable. Sonali Bendre explored this vulnerability in the second edition of the hit ZEE5 series.

After embodying the epitome of strength in the first edition, Bendre had to showcase the inner turmoil of her character in the second instalment. “The season starts with Radha still behind bars, which shocks Amina. She assumed Radha would be released quickly, but Dipankar’s [Jaideep Ahlawat] campaign delayed proceedings. This situation shows Amina that the world is changing fast, and it makes her doubt if truth really has the power to make a difference anymore. She questions her effectiveness as a journalist and wonders if she has lost touch [with the current pulse]. The season [is also about] her search for answers and exploring her vulnerable side,” explains the actor.

Having fallen in love with long-format storytelling, Bendre said that being on a film set has its perks, but there is something more satisfying about exploring all the layers of a character. “In the first season, I got to explore the character of Amina because [the story] was not just two hours but at least six to seven-hours long. Inhabiting that role again is fantastic because you get the liberty to explore more layers of the character and do full justice to all its facets. That was fascinating for me,” smiles Bendre, who marked her debut in the OTT space with the first season.
