About his “greenwashing,” he was part of a campaign for the environment. However, he is known to be an avid golf lover. The sport is one that is the most detrimental to the natural environment. This was considered hypocrisy by many, as he often chastised people through social media about staying green.

Ryu Jun Yeol responded that it was due to his own greed in trying to create a good image for himself.
“I thought about how I could share the love I received and naturally I began talking about [environmentally-friendliness] as I love the environment and also want to leave something for the later generations. As such, I think I became greedy in wanting to have a good image. I will return to my roots and make efforts where they can’t be seen, rather than doing things for show. “
