Why Kalki 2898 AD makers chose June 27 release date? Know how it is connected to Mahabharata, Lord Vishnu

Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD is releasing on June 27, and the date has a special significance according to both numerology and astrology, as well as a link with the Mahabharata.

Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD is on the cusp of release now. The long-awaited film is finally hitting the screens on June 27, Thursday. The Rs 600-crore film is based on the Mahabharata and other Indian scriptures with a setting of a dystopian 29th century showing the arrival of Kalki, the prophesised 10th avatar of Lord Vishnu. But not many know that the release date also has somewhat of a connection with the Mahabharata.

Kalki 2898 AD release date

The Nag Ashwin film was earlier slated to be released in May but was postponed to accommodate the Lok Sabha elections. The June 27 release date has been questioned by some as it is a Thursday or a non-festive week, which means the film is not going for a traditional Friday release. One of the reasons could be numerology. The date 2898 is pivotal to the film’s setting as it is the year (by Gregorian calendar) in which the film is set, and that date is based on Aryabhatta’s calculations and Indian scriptures. But the sum of the individual digits of 2898 is 27, which neatly fits the release date.

June 2024’s Mahabharata connection

Even as the film’s makers have not commented on the June 27 release date’s logic, a number of astrologers have theorised that the reason could be linked to the Vikram Samvat, or the Hindu calendar. As per the Vikram and Saka calendars, the last week of June 2024 sees the beginning of the Ashadha month. The Ashadha month begins on June 23 this year and ends July 21. Interestingly, the Krishna Paksha (half) of the month this year has only 13 days, instead of the usual 15. This happens rarely due to the movement of the stars. Astrologer Sanjay Upadhyay claims that the last time this happened was over 5000 years ago, just before the Kurukshetra War took place in the Mahabharata era. Kalki 2898 AD is releasing on the sixth day of this shortened Krishna Paksha of Ashadha.

Given that Nag Ashwin has said that Kalki 2898 AD is intended as a sequel to the events of the Mahabharata, this also adds another link between the film and the epic. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwatthama, one of the seven Chiranjeevis (immortal beings) mentioned in the Mahabharata, and the rumour is that more Chiranjeevis could appear in the film, played by some big stars.
