Sathyaraj says the commercial success of actors like Prabhas and Vijay has restricted them from experimenting with roles.
Sathyaraj, who is best known for playing Katappa in Baahubali, is currently busy promoting his upcoming movie Weapon. In a recent interview, Sathyaraj talked about how stardom has affected the versatility of the actors and cited examples of Prabhas and Vijay.
In a conversation with OTT Play, Sathyaraj said that versatility was once a defining and empowering characteristic for actors. However, he claimed that this quality is becoming increasingly rare among today’s stars. He said, “I think that is because the market and business of a few heroes have grown. So, when the projects they take on also get bigger, the films have to be dubbed so that audiences across the world can see them. It becomes a mandate, which restricts them from indulging in a variety of roles.”
Sathyaraj who has worked with both Prabhas and Vijay cited their example of how stardom restricts them from experimenting with roles and said, “Vijay has done films like Love Today, Thulladha Manamum Thullum, and Kadhalukku Mariyadhai. They were so successful, too. But now that he is a big star and business has grown around him, he cannot come back to doing such films. Prabhas is another example where he has done a lot of romance films, but after Baahubali, you can only see him in larger-than-life roles. Today’s cinema has become such.”
Meanwhile, Sathyaraj will be next seen in the action thriller, Weapon, written and directed by Guhan Senniappan, and produced by M. S. Manzoor via Million Studio. The film also stars Vasanth Ravi, with Rajiv Menon, Tanya Hope, AK Mydeen, and Rajeev Pillai in supporting roles, and is scheduled to release on June 7. Prabhas on the other hand will be seen in the movie Kalki 2898 AD which also stars Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Disha Patani along with others in key roles. Thalapathy Vijay will be next seen in the movie Greatest of All Time, which will also be his last film before he joins politics.
