Anushka Sharma’s biggest hit saw controversy even before release, changed life of beggar; earned Rs 792 crore worldwide



This film starring Anushka Sharma, had two stars, earned of profit of over Rs 700 crore despite facing controversy.

Anushka Sharma has been away from film since last 6 years. However, the actress, who made her grand debut with Shah Rukh Khan, has given several hits and blockbusters and is one of the actresses who has worked with all the three Khans. However, her biggest hit faced controversy even before the release. 

The film we are talking about had two stars other than Anushka Sharma and was rejected by Shah Rukh Khan. However, it later emerged to be a blockbuster, collected over Rs 700 crore at the box office. It is none other than PK. 

PK is a science fiction comedy-drama film edited and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The film stars Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput and Aamir Khan in lead roles along with Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla and Sanjay Dutt in key roles. The film revolved around how a nude humanoid alien lands on Earth on a research mission in Rajasthan, India, and is stranded when the remote control to summon his spaceship is stolen.  In his quest to retrieve his remote control, he encounters various religious practices and beliefs, leading him to question the rituals and superstitions associated with religion.

Before the release of the film, Aamir Khan dropped some poster from the film where he was seen posing nude with a radio in hand. The posters sparked controversy and protests. A case was filed in Supreme Court against the actor over the poster. In the suit, the plaintiff alleged that the nude poster which has been circulated all over is vulgar and obscene and has the tendency to corrupt the minds of the people. The plaintiff further claimed the actor had done a “shameful” act and hence he should withdraw such obscene images immediately. Protestors also demanded a ban on the movie, however, the plea was rejected by Supreme Court. 

Later even after the release of the movie, there were protests as some of the religious groups found the movie promoting love jihad as their was a love story of how a Hindu girl, Jaggu (Anushka Sharma) falls in love with a muslim guy, Sarfaraz (Sushant Singh Rajput). However, despite facing the controversies and protest, the film emerged to be the highest-grossing movie of that time. Made in Rs 85 crore, the film collected Rs 769 crore worldwide at the box office. The film also starred a beggar, Manoj Roy, who was seen begging on Delhi streets. Though he had a small role in the movie, his life changed after this and he opened his own shop in his village. 

Anushka Sharma has starred in several other hits and blockbusters like Sultan, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Jab Tak Hai Jaan among others. The actress will next be seen in Chakda Xpress which is based on the life of the Indian woman cricketer Jhulan Goswami and her struggle.
