The release clause in the contract of Manchester City target Bruno Guimaraes “will expire” at 23:59 BST on Monday, June 24th, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Newcastle midfielder can be signed for £100m until then but, after that point, the Magpies will be in full control of the player’s future.
Pep Guardiola’s side and Arsenal have both been heavily linked with Guimaraes over the past few weeks but it does look like the Brazilian will be staying at St James’ Park.
There have been reports that Newcastle are under pressure to sell players before the end of the month, to stay within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR).
However, it seems like that money will come from the sale of Yankuba Minteh. The winger, who was on loan at Feyenoord last season, is said to be a target for Everton and Lyon.
Are alternatives to Guimaraes being considered?
City are known to be scouting Benfica’s Joao Neves, but the Portuguese international’s €120m (£101m) release clause makes any deal unlikely at this stage.
The club are believed to be admirers of Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as well but a bid this summer is deemed unlikely.
Will City sign any players this summer?
The Premier League champions are believed to be wary about making sizeable purchases due to concerns about PSR and Financial Fair Play, hence their reluctance to pursue Guimaraes.
However, a move for Troyes winger Savio is expected to be finalised soon. The Brazilian caught the eye on loan at Girona last season and he was included in Brazil’s squad for the Copa America.
Replacements may be needed for the likes of Ederson or (potentially) Julian Alvarez if the two players leave the Etihad but their departures are not thought to be imminent.
