Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) will host its flagship developer conference, Google I/O, on Tuesday, May 14th, and it’s set to be all about artificial intelligence.
The search giant is expected to unveil new AI-related products and updates on its AI model Gemini. A major focus will be on Google’s efforts to combine generative AI with its flagship Search product.
Search is a major area of focus for the AI industry. Chatbots like Microsoft (MSFT) backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT are changing the way users access information on the internet. Observers fear GenAI solutions could render traditional search engines obsolete.
The Mountain View, California-based company combined its hardware and Android teams in April, in a bid to better integrate AI into both its software and hardware products.
Google’s (GOOG) (GOOGL) Gemini has been out for over three months, enabling a host of new AI tricks on select Samsung (OTCPK:SSNLF) and Pixel smartphones. The AI features are designed to help users with photography, communication, and writing in general.
The company is also expected to talk more about the next version of its operating system, Android 15, with deeper Gemini integration. Google is also likely to offer a look at new versions of its other platforms, including Wear OS, Android Auto, and Android TV.
The I/O conference will be held right on the heels of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI’s Spring Update, where the company unveiled GPT-4o, its latest ‘flagship model’ available for free to all users.
OpenAI boss Sam Altman refuted reports on Friday that the company was planning to unveil its AI-powered search product.
The startup is also reportedly closing on a deal with Apple (AAPL) to integrate ChatGPT features in Apple’s (AAPL) iOS 18, the next iPhone operating system, further ratcheting up pressure on Google (GOOG) (GOOGL).
