- The Association of American Railroads [AAR] reported on Wednesday that for the week ending March 2, 2024, U.S. rail traffic was 483,138 carloads and intermodal units, up 3.9% year-over-year.
- Total carloads for the week fell 4.3% to 220,406 carloads, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 262,732 containers and trailers, rising 12%.
- Eight of the 10 carload commodity groups posted a year-over-year increase for the week. They included motor vehicles and parts, metallic ores and metals, and miscellaneous carloads.
- Commodity groups that fell year-over-year for the week included coal and nonmetallic minerals.
- North American rail volume for the week, on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads was 324,643 carloads, down 4.6% year-over-year, and 344,823 intermodal units, up 10.9%.
- Canadian railroads reported 89,148 carloads for the week, down 3.6%, and 71,183 intermodal units, up 9.2%.
- Mexican railroads reported 15,089 carloads for the week, down 14%, and 10,908 intermodal units, down 2.2%.
