In a thrilling finale that kept fans on the edge of their seats, India clinched their second T20 World Cup title after a 17-year-long wait. However, the real twist came when Virat Kohli announced his retirement from T20 internationals right after the huge victory.
During a Q&A on the podium, Kohli revealed, “This was my last T20 World Cup, exactly what we wanted to achieve.” His retirement, which he dubed as an “open secret” was confirmed with a smile and also saw the cricketer share his hope for the futre.”Time for the next generation to take the T20 game forward,” he said.

His announcement gave way to a flood of reactions from fans, friends and film stars. Ranveer Singh congratulated Team India on their big win in the final. In his Instagram story, he bid farewell to Player of the Match Virat, saying, “The King dropped the anchor. What a way to cap an incredible career.”

Ranveer also acknowledged the efforts of other players, including Akshar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya. In a second Instagram story, he paid tribute to India’s coach and former cricketer Rahul Dravid, hailing him as ‘THE WALL’ and celebrating the team’s remarkable comeback.
Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi, on the other hand, couldn’t contain his emotions. In a heartfelt tweet, he wrote, “Total emotional atyachar right now! While I’m going crazy celebrating #TeamIndia’s win, the legendary @imVkohli just announced this was his last #T20 game for Team India… feels like a win and a loss at the same time! Will miss our superhero in T20s.”
Meanwhile, actor Arjun Rampal took to social media and expressed his shock over the announcement saying, “Did Virat Kohli just retire from T20?” Well, Arjun, he did! And what a way to bow out.
Kohli’s retirement marks the end of an era in Indin cricket. He is one of the few cricketers who have won both the ODI and T20 World Cups and has a career tally of 4188 runs in 125 matches.
