Edward Bluemel: ‘My Lady Jane’ incorporates elements of ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Game of Thrones’; it’s the full package |

June has been by far one of the most entertaining months of the year, keeping audiences hooked to their television screens with an impressive lineup of films and web series. After getting a taste of fresh gossip from the ton in ‘Bridgerton‘ to sinking their teeth into the drama and politics of ‘House of the Dragon‘, it is now time for another historical piece that gives its own spin to the history books.
My Lady Jane‘, a quick-witted romantic series, set in an alternate-fantasy Tudor world, arrives on screens this Thursday, June 27. As fans eagerly await the release of the new series, ETimes had the pleasure of sitting down with Edward Bluemel, who stars as Lord Guildford Dudley in the upcoming series. The actor gives us an inside take on why fans of historical dramas will love his new series which he promises is a unique blend of action, romance, comedy, and drama.
We asked Bluemel what surprised him the most about the show that drew him to sign on for the leading role opposite Emily Bader‘s Lady Jane. He shared, “I think it just came off the page, like the script was so unique to me in terms of genre. It’s something that I haven’t really seen much of—this sort of historical fantasy that’s very funny but incredibly heartfelt. And, you know, at its core, it’s a romance. It felt like something from a bygone era, from the eighties and nineties, when there were a few films of this sort of tone. Those films were very inspirational to me as an actor. So, it was so exciting to be involved in something like this that feels like a sort of nostalgia trip, really.”

My Lady Jane – Official Trailer | Prime Video

‘My Lady Jane’ premieres on Prime Video at a time when audiences have just binged on a new season of the Regency drama ‘Bridgerton’ and are captivated by the power struggle in the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel, ‘House of the Dragon’. We asked Bluemel how ‘My Lady Jane’ will carve out its space amidst these royal ballrooms and dragons. He confidently responded, “Well, I think if you take something like ‘Bridgerton’ and something like ‘Game of Thrones,’ this is somewhere exactly in the middle of that. It incorporates elements of both. You’ve got the really fun fantasy side of it, the romance side, and on top of that, it’s incredibly funny.”
Bluemel also reflected on why he believes historical shows continue to captivate audiences, even in the 21st century, “I think what people are looking for in these sorts of period pieces and genres is escapism. They’re looking for beautiful costumes, amazing sets, castles, big set pieces. And I think we’ve got all of that. It’s really fun to be in a show that is the full package.”

Instead of focusing on the brief reign of the young Tudor queen and her subsequent beheading in 1553, ‘My Lady Jane’, inspired by the best-selling book series, reimagines history where the damsel in distress saves herself. In this radical retelling of English royal history, viewers can expect an epic tale of true love and high adventure, blending action, history, fantasy, comedy, and steamy romance.
The eight-episode series features an ensemble star cast, including Emily Bader, Edward Bluemel, Jordan Peters, Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Rob Brydon, and Jim Broadbent.
