Shah Rukh Khan: Farhan Akhtar REVEALS why he and Hrithik Roshan could not do Dil Chahta Hai together

Farhan Akhtar, who made his directorial debut with the cult classic “Dil Chahta Hai” in 2001, recently discussed his initial casting choices and how he ‘almost’ roped in Hrithik Roshan for the role.

While talking to Pinkvilla, reflecting on the early days of pitching “Dil Chahta Hai,” Farhan confirmed that he had initially thought of Roshan as one of the leads alongside Aamir Khan.

He admired Hrithik’s performance in “Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai” and approached him for the role, also considering Abhishek Bachchan. However, due to differing career aspirations at the time, a collaboration didn’t materialize.
“But somehow they had other plans… the kind of movies they wanted to do… there’s no judgment here, to each their own, so we couldn’t collaborate on that film,” he said.
Regarding his subsequent film “Lakshya,” which celebrated its 20th anniversary this month, Farhan noted that Hrithik Roshan was always his first choice once the screenplay started developing.
When asked if he would change anything about “Lakshya” today, Farhan acknowledged past statements about possibly changing the film’s release timing but affirmed that he now views the film as a product of its time and circumstances. He believes in learning from past experiences rather than scrutinizing them, asserting that “Lakshya” remains true to its original vision and decisions.
After working with Bollywood’s King Khan Shah Rukh Khan in films like, ‘Don’, and ‘Don 2’, Farhan Akhtar, in the same interview, spoke about about his possible future collaboration with SRK.
While interacting with fans during the masterclass, along with producer Ritesh Sidhwani, someone inquired whether the duo anticipated collaborating with Shah Rukh Khan again in the near future.
The actor-director responded positively, affirming that they definitely plan to work with Shah Rukh Khan again. He mentioned that they will find a project they both want to work on, expressing certainty about future collaboration. He emphasized the importance of finding a mutual connection for a project, confidently stating, “100 percent.”

Farhan has previously directed Shah Rukh Khan in the 2006 action thriller Don and its 2011 sequel, Don 2, with SRK portraying the iconic anti-hero. Both films were produced under the banner of Excel Entertainment, the production company co-founded by Farhan and Ritesh Sidhwani.
In addition, SRK made a guest appearance in Luck by Chance, the directorial debut of Farhan’s sister, Zoya Akhtar, which was produced by Excel Entertainment. Furthermore, the production company co-produced SRK’s 2017 film Raees.
