Veteran actor Farida Jalal expressed her disappointment with Yash Chopra and Karan Johar for not casting her in their projects despite indicating they would. She shared that she accepted a small role in “Dil To Pagal Hai” after Yash Chopra personally called her, expressing a desire to continue their professional relationship. However, neither he nor YRF Studio offered her any roles afterward.Farida, who played a memorable supporting role in “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” was told that Aditya Chopra didn’t want her back for “Dil To Pagal Hai,” even though he wasn’t directing it.
In an interview with India Today, Farida Jalal revealed that Karan Johar acknowledged her grievances and personally reached out to inquire if she would consider a small role in his film “Student of the Year.” Despite agreeing, she once again found herself without any roles later on.“I’m very hurt; I’ll say it loud and clear. They were beginners, and we were there to hold their hands. At a certain point, an actor also needs to be held,” she said.
Recalling what happened between her and Yash Chopra, she said, “He called me out of the blue and said, ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai mein role hai, Adi bolta hai, we mustn’t talk to Farida ji, but I put my foot down and said only Farida will do this role’.” Yash Chopra cited the example of Anupam Kher, who agrees to all sorts of roles, regardless of screen time. “He said that he would like our professional relationship to go on, and that stuck with me. He said, ‘You must do this film, and you should always say yes when Adi or I call you. I want this relationship to continue’. I loved that line. I was so happy when he said he wanted our relationship to never end. I did one scene in that film; I went all the way.”
But, she said, YRF didn’t live up to its side of the bargain. “What happened? I was ready to continue the relationship. But if you cast somebody else instead of me, it hurts. I didn’t think twice when he made the very big jumla about relationships. She said that both Yash Chopra and Karan Johar sent video messages for her when she appeared on Farooq Shaikh’s talk show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai, and she sent each of them a box of chocolates, but it didn’t result in the resumption of their’relationship’.
Opening up about being ‘wronged’ by Karan, she said, “One fine day, I’m in my car, and I get a call from Karan. He said he wanted me to do Dadi’s role, and I said, ‘Of course I’ll do it, Karan’. He said, ‘I told them in the office to not call you; I’ll call you myself’. Why did he say that? Because he knew, he knew that we’d wronged her in many ways. I said, ‘You understand, don’t you, Karan? This is what I needed. One phone call’.
She mentioned that while’shifting loyalties’ are part of the business, she couldn’t hide the fact that she was deeply hurt by both Karan Johar and Yash Chopra. She emphasized her feelings, stating, “I’m hurt, I’m hurt,” making it clear that the wound runs deep and will continue to hurt. Farida’s recent appearance was in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut streaming series, ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.’
