It’s been seven years since singer Sonu Nigam deleted and quit using Twitter, now X. However, he recently hit headlines after a user by a similar name made a political statement about the ruling party losing their seat in Ayodhya in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.After it was reported widely as Sonu’s reaction, the singer expressed his disappointment over people who did not conduct a sanity check on the case.
The Twitter post of the person after the results on June 4 reads, “The government which beautified the whole of Ayodhya, gave a new airport, railway station, built the Ram temple after 500 years, created an entire temple economy, that party is having to struggle for the Ayodhya seat.” Many user shared it as Sonu Nigam’s post, and the singer was bombarded with criticism.

Now, in a recent chat with Hindustan Times, he slammed people for not conducting a fact check and said that he wondered how people, including the news channels, mistook the post in his name. He asked why they didn’t do their basic sanity check by reading the description of the account as the handle says Sonu Nigam Singh and the description says that he’s a criminal lawyer from Bihar.
He also added that this kind of nastiness forced him to quit Twitter seven years ago. He doesn’t believe in making sensational political remarks and only focuses on his work. But this incident is alarming not just for him but also for his family’s safety.
Sonu further added that this user has been doing this for a while, and he is often inundated with screenshots of his tweets from his well-wishers. His team has reached out to the person and insisted on fixing his handle name and asked to stop pretending like Sonu. Millions of people are being misled by the use of Sonu’s surname. He is trying to fix the issue.
The account reportedly has over 59K followers, including the PM of India, many politicians, and celebs.
